How to Become a Security Guard in Ontario

The complete guide to getting your Ontario security guard licence — from eligibility and training through the provincial exam and Ministry application. Plus: career paths once you're licensed.

Why Ontario Requires Security Guard Licensing

In Ontario, working as a security guard without a valid licence is illegal under the Private Security and Investigative Services Act (PSISA). The licensing system exists to ensure that all security personnel meet minimum training and background standards — protecting both the public and licensed professionals in the industry.

The process is straightforward and takes most people 4–8 weeks from starting training to receiving their licence. Here's exactly how it works.

Step-by-Step: Ontario Security Guard Licence Process

01

Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be legally eligible to work in Canada
  • Have no criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted (a criminal record check is part of the application process)
  • Be physically and mentally capable of performing security duties
02

Complete the Approved Security Guard Training

You must complete an Ontario government-approved security guard training course before writing the provincial exam. The training covers:

  • Powers and procedures for security guards under Ontario law
  • Emergency response and first aid principles
  • Use of force theory (physical techniques are not taught at this stage)
  • Ethics and professionalism
  • Communications and report writing
  • Fire safety, bomb threats, and critical incident response
  • Access control and patrol procedures
03

Write the Ministry-Approved Security Guard Test

After completing your training, you must pass the government-administered security guard test (exam) to apply for your licence. Key facts:

  • The test is administered by Serco Canada Inc. on behalf of the Ministry of the Solicitor General
  • You must score 75% or higher to pass
  • The exam covers all topics from your approved training course
  • The test fee is approximately $60 CAD (subject to change — verify with Serco)
  • If you fail, you may rewrite after a waiting period
  • You have 2 years from your test date to apply for your licence
04

Apply for Your Ontario Security Guard Licence

Once you pass the test, apply to the Ministry of the Solicitor General (MCSCS) for your individual Security Guard Licence:

  • Submit your application online through the Ontario government licensing portal
  • Provide your valid photo ID
  • Submit your criminal record check (from your local police service)
  • Pay the licence application fee (currently $80 for a 2-year licence)
  • Provide proof of passing the provincial security guard test
  • Licences are typically processed within 4–6 weeks
05

Carry Your Licence & Maintain It

  • You must carry your physical security guard licence card on you at all times while working
  • Your licence number must be made available to anyone who requests it
  • Renew your licence before it expires (every 2 years) — renewal requires ongoing compliance
  • Report any criminal charges or convictions to the Ministry promptly
  • Additional training (e.g., use of force, handcuffing) requires separate certification

Mobile Patrol Officer

Vehicle-based patrol covering multiple client sites in one shift. Requires a valid G driver's licence. Often pays more than static positions.

Event Security

Deployed at concerts, sporting events, festivals, and corporate functions. Work is often contract-based and may be seasonal.

Loss Prevention Officer

Retail-focused role preventing and detecting shoplifting and internal theft. May wear plain clothes. Often involves citizen's arrest authority.

Executive Protection

Personal security for high-profile individuals. Requires extensive experience, training, and often additional certifications. Not an entry-level role.

Security Supervisor / Manager

Oversees a team of guards, manages post orders, handles client relations. Typically requires 3–5+ years of field experience.

Common Questions

How long does it take to get your security guard licence in Ontario?+

Most people complete the process in 4–8 weeks: 1–5 days for the training course, a short wait for the exam, and 4–6 weeks for the Ministry to process the application.

Can I work as a security guard before my licence arrives?+

No. You must hold a valid Ontario security guard licence to work legally. Working without one is an offence under PSISA.

Do I need First Aid certification?+

It's not a mandatory provincial requirement for licensing, but many employers (including ApexGuard) require or strongly prefer current Standard First Aid and CPR certification.

Can I work as a security guard with a criminal record?+

It depends on the nature of the offence and whether a pardon has been granted. The Ministry reviews applications on a case-by-case basis. A criminal record does not automatically disqualify you.

Is there a security guard exam in French?+

Yes. The Ministry of the Solicitor General's exam is available in both English and French.
