Types of Security Guards Explained

A static security guard is assigned to a fixed post — a building entrance, reception desk, parking booth, or interior location. They provide a visible security presence that deters crime and manages access.

Mobile patrol officers conduct scheduled or random patrols across multiple client sites in a single shift using a patrol vehicle. They check for intrusions, hazards, and security breaches at each location — providing broad coverage at a lower cost than a dedicated static guard at every site.

Event security guards manage crowd control, access point screening, conflict de-escalation, and emergency response at events ranging from small corporate functions to large outdoor festivals. Event security requires a different skill set than static guarding — officers must excel at communication, de-escalation, and rapid situational assessment.

Executive protection (EP) agents — sometimes called bodyguards — provide close personal security for individuals at elevated risk: executives, public figures, celebrities, or individuals facing threats. EP is a specialized discipline requiring extensive training beyond a standard security guard licence, including threat assessment, advance work, route planning, and emergency driving.

Loss prevention (LP) officers work in retail environments to prevent and detect shoplifting and employee theft. LP officers often work in plain clothes to blend into the retail environment, monitoring customer behaviour and coordinating with management. They are trained in citizen's arrest procedures and investigation documentation.

Parking enforcement officers manage vehicle access to private lots and enforce parking bylaws on private property under Ontario's Trespass to Property Act. They issue parking infractions, coordinate towing of unauthorized vehicles, and manage lot access during peak periods.

Alarm response officers respond to triggered alarm signals at client properties outside of business hours. When an alarm activates, an alarm response officer attends the site, assesses for signs of intrusion or emergency, and contacts police or the client as appropriate. This service is more cost-effective than overnight guarding at every location.

Security consultants assess your property, operations, or event and provide a formal written security plan — identifying vulnerabilities, recommending countermeasures, and specifying staffing levels. Consulting is often the first step before deploying security personnel, especially for new developments or organizations that have experienced a security incident.
