Starting In-Home Support: Questions Families Can Ask

October 4, 2026· 5 min read·ApexHealth Services

Before arranging non-medical support at home, outline the help needed, how visits fit the routine, and how the person’s preferences will guide the plan.

Begin with the person's priorities

Arranging support at home can bring practical and emotional questions for the whole family. Start by asking the person what matters most to them: which routines they want to maintain, what they would welcome help with, and what they prefer to continue doing independently.

This conversation helps the family describe a support request without turning it into a list of tasks detached from the person's daily life.

Describe the help clearly

Before contacting a provider, write down the routines or tasks where support may be useful. These might include companionship, meal preparation, light homemaking, errands, or agreed daily-living support. Note when the help is needed, how often visits may be useful, and any household preferences a support worker should understand.

Be specific about the location, preferred schedule, home access, family contact, and how updates should be shared. The more clearly the request is described, the easier it is to discuss whether the service fits and whether the schedule is available.

Questions to discuss with a provider

  • Which tasks are included in the proposed non-medical service?
  • What days, visit lengths, and schedules are available?
  • How are household routines and communication preferences shared with support staff?
  • Who should the family contact about a schedule change or concern?
  • How can the family review and adjust the plan if needs change?

Clarify service boundaries

Ask the provider to explain what is and is not included. Non-medical home support does not replace nursing, clinical assessment, treatment, or medical advice. Questions about diagnoses, medication changes, or clinical care should go to an appropriately licensed healthcare professional.

Keep the plan flexible

Needs and routines can change. Agree on how changes will be communicated and when the family can revisit the requested tasks or schedule. A clear, respectful plan helps everyone understand their role while keeping the person's preferences at the centre.

ApexHealth Services coordinates non-medical PSW support, companionship, homemaking, respite, and overnight support based on the request and availability.
